LESSON PLAN

A lesson plan is usually prepared by the teacher who conducts a lesson for students to make sure a lesson meets its objectives and learning takes place effectively. A lesson plan includes lesson objectives, anticipated problems from students, time allocation for each task within the lesson, activity types, and interactions that take place during activities such as student-student, teacher–student, and material that will be used for the lesson, etc. Apart from these, a lesson plan may also include personal aims that focus on personal development of the teacher. Furthermore, a well-planned lesson may have a board plan that is to be displayed in the class for students to record. Thus, it is clear that a lesson plan paves the way for the teacher who conducts the lesson to be well organized beforehand.

A lesson plan ensures that lesson objectives are met and learning takes place effectively in the class. Furthermore, a lesson plan should eventually be connected to the goals of the unit.

DEFINITION

·       A lesson plan is the instructor’s road map of what students need to learn and how it will be done effectively during the class time.

·       A lesson plan is a teacher’s detailed description of the course of instruction for a lesson. A daily lesson plan is developed by a teacher to guide class learning. Details may vary depending on the preference of the teacher, subject being covered, and the needs of the students.

According to Lester.B.Stands; “A Lesson plan is a plan of Action. It therefore, includes the working philosophy of the teacher, his knowledge of philosophy, his information about & understanding of his pupils, his comprehension of the objectives of education, his knowledge of the materials & his ability to utilise effective methods.”

CHARACTERISTICS OF GOOD LESSON PLANNING

Ø  In lesson planning, the general and important objectives should be clearly defined.

Ø  The lesson plan should relate to suitable teaching method and its use.

Ø  Contains continuity component reviews and reflects on content from the previous lesson.

Ø  Subject, time, class, average age of the students should be mentioned in the Lesson Plan.

Ø  Important examples should be included in lesson planning.

Ø  Inspirational or motivational methods should be experimented in lesson planning.

Ø  In lesson planning, the time for each topic should appropriately be predetermined.

Ø  It keeps the teacher free from the errors of thoughtless teaching.

Ø  It makes the proper atmosphere for learning process.

Ø  It saves time in the sense that the students get a better understanding of the subject & develops some desirable attitude in a specific time, while in the absence of a plan; it might have taken more time for similar understanding.

Ø  It provides continuity in teaching process because lesson plans establish proper connection between different plans of study.

Ø  It stimulates the teacher to introduce striking question & illustration.

Ø  It provides greater freedom in teaching, for a teacher who has properly planned a lesson enters the classroom with confidence without any anxiety.

Ø  The teacher also gets a clear idea about when should start evaluation and when should proceed to the next lesson.

LIMITATIONS OF LESSON PLAN

·       More time is required to prepare a lesson plan. Teacher cannot work/teach independently.

·       Sometimes simple matters become complicated.

·       The material was written by the teachers for particular students.

·       Each class is different & teachers need to be able to adapt materials from whatever source.

Difference between Unit plan and Lesson Plan

A lesson plan elaborates, basically, on objectives of a particular lesson and how teaching is planned in a way to achieve those objectives. A unit plan, on the other hand, covers a wider area; a unit that can include many lessons. Furthermore, a unit plan includes goals broken down in terms of lessons, the outline of the content intended to cover and cross-curricular references, etc. A lesson plan is usually prepared by the teacher who teaches that particular lesson the class. However, a unit plan is applicable to many teachers and those who play administrative roles in a school and is effective for a semester. Moreover, a lesson plan can include personal aims for teacher development, unlike unit plans.
