Unit plan
UNIT PLAN
A unit plan is also important to show the main goals of a study unit and
how lessons, evaluations and practical sessions connect to achieve the unit
goals. Hence, unit plans are often used for discussions for syllabus reviews
as well to explain the skills and knowledge students are expected to acquire
towards the end. A unit plan usually consists of
·
vision/unit goals
·
unit content in detail
·
time allocated for the completion of each stage
·
how lessons/stages are designed to realize these goals collectively
·
pre and post-tests
·
cross-curricular connections, etc.
A Unit Plan is a detailed outline for a series of connected lesson plans on
a selected
topic of study, which last 2-4 weeks. It organizes instruction and ensures teaching meaningful
& effective.
According
to Preston,“A Unit is a large block of related subject matter as can be
overviewed
by the
learner”
Criteria
for a Good Unit
1. It should keep in view the needs, the capabilities & interest of the
pupils.
2. It should provide a variety
of field trip, experiments,
Demonstration,
projects etc.
3.
It should take into
account the previous experiences and background of the pupils.
4. It should
provide for new experiences
which the
students have not
done before.
5. The length of
the unit should be such
as to maintain interest of the
students up
to the last.
6.
The materials of the
unit should
consist of familiar
& related topic.
7.
It should be flexible.
8.
It should be related to
the social and

Steps in Unit Planning
1.
Selection & Systematization of the
Unit
The first step in the preparation of a Unit Plan is to select a Unit from the subject. A Unit should be viewed as a whole. If the matter in the textbook
is not adequately grouped
and presented, the teacher has to reorganize & regroup it before developing the
unit
plan. The
teacher must take
into account the availability of
adequate time.
2.
Content Analysis
After selecting the Unit,
the teacher has to analysis its content carefully. It is must
be divided into subunits and this must be well connected & should maintain proper sequence. This
analysis
helps the teacher to have a
thorough knowledge of the
subject matter.
3.
Determination of Objectives
The third step is to determine
the major as well as specific
objectives that should be
realized by teaching the unit. These aspects
of analysis should be in tune with the nature of the learning materials and level of the learners.
4.
Learning Experience
Deciding the learning
experiences is the
next step.
These
should
be
objective based,
life
centered
& learner centered.
5. Selection of
Teaching Aids/
Learning Aids
For making the learning experiences objectives based, & effective, a variety of instructional aids may become necessary. For that
it should be decided carefully
what
teaching aids
should be
used.
6.
Evaluation
The types of Evaluation tools &
techniques proposed to be
used for assessing the realization of the pre-determined goals are to be decided. These should cater
to the formative and summative evaluation. A Unit test to be
developed for
the later.
7. Assignment
The final step
is to decide the assignments
to be given to
students so as to provide opportunity to work independently. The assignment should be varied & suitable to
the needs and interest of the learner.
